Edward Martel, Marty - to those who knew him - wasn’t as handsomely attractive as the men she had seen before she fled Trinidad. He, however, had a innate sense of instinctively knowing what others wanted and often knew what they really were deep down. Vivian mused that was what made him so suitable to making a success of Hush, a hotel which literally sold sex. It was as much as she knew about the elder Immortal.
Marty watched the girl beneath dark lashes. If she knew what he was exactly he had no doubt she would flee. Then again, Vivian was not one to run from things she never understood. Not that he suspected a woman with barely a high school education could understand what an Incubus – more correctly – a Cambion offspring of an incubi and succubus, could be. He felt she would likely understand he had a history going far back to the time of the Sumerian King and Gilgamesh’s father – Lilu. Marty, being one of the many offspring of Lilu and Lilith. He was far older than she could imagine. Not as old as the sea god Poseidon, old enough to know however the way Vivian was hurtling herself into the idea as an Immortal she could do anything---with out consequences ---was become to put it mildly irritating.
“There are rules.” Marty interjected, making no bones about what had him annoyed with her current escapee. She had taken one of the cars and done everything to test the boundaries of her Immortality. She survived the car… “It was an expensive car.” He grumbled.
“You can buy another one.” Vivian replied.
“Vivian!” He snapped.
Vivian shrank back into her chair. They were sitting at a diner, having a meal while Marty chastised his ---daughter.
“The police had to involved; this goes above and beyond anything wrong you could have done. We do not attract unneeded attention, child.”
“I’m not a child.” Her lip pouted into a sulk. “Fuck sakes it’s not like they haven’t seen a car crash before. I mean, come on, this shit is getting old. Rules. Rules. Blah. Blah. Blah.”
“Vivian stop it.” Marty tone caused her to snap her head up to look at him. He really was pissed at her. She wondered briefly what he could do to her…
“Anything.” He said, matter of fact.
Her eyes widened in complete terror. “Did you just…”
“Read your mind? Yes.” He stabbed at the meal in front of him with his fork, leaving Vivian thinking he likely wanted to do the same to her. She was just starting to realize there was something more powerful about this Immortal. He wasn’t like the other men --- the captain. Mac. Or the Old Man.
“What are you?” she finally asked.
“A nightmare. A dream. I can be both to the extreme if you continue to behave in his fashion. There are rules we have Vivian and we all follow them as best we can.” Marty knew some situations meant rules had to be bent. Some mortals knew. Children were born who were not meant to be born. Precious things had to be given up to protect everyone. Compromises. All of it was as painful as following the rules which protected everyone.
“That doesn’t answer my question.” Vivian needed more answer than words that made no sense to her.
“I am a Cambion offspring of an incubi and succubus. My world is nightmares and dreams. It is how I created Hush.”
Lifting her coffee cup to take a drink Vivian gaze settled on him above the rim of the cup. “The fuck…a what and what?” Sometimes she wished she was more educated everyone was far smarter than her.
“I am an ancient Immortal who can beat the ever living shit out of you in both your waking world and in your dream world. Trust me, I will, if you persist in this waywardness that is not endearing you to anyone.”
Vivian lowered her gaze. “So what am I banned from?”
Marty snorted. “My cars for starters.”
He’d give her more for her actions, right then, she was temporarily relieved to watch him stop stabbing at the meal on his plate. She sighed and drank again from her coffee cup. So far the limitless of Immortality was becoming very narrow.
Rules.
She sighed again.
